Bosque Municipal de Atenas

Posted on July 24, 2024July 9, 2024 by Ultimate Guide

About: While these trails are open and available to the public, there is no official entrance and there are no workers to help you. The good part is that it is free. The entrance is just off the side of the road and you can park at the restaurant across the street. There is no map, but there are some trail signs with the distances marked, so pay attention to which trails you take so that you don’t get lost and can easily find your way back. There is a trail that goes all the way down to the river, but in the dry season the river may be dried up.

Province: Alajuela

Starting from: Downtown Alajuela

Time to reach from starting location: 52 minutes

Time needed for activity: 1-2 hours

Kid friendly: Yes

Wheelchair accessible: No

What to wear and bring: Comfortable clothes, walking or hiking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, hat, sunglasses, umbrella, poncho or rain jacket, field guides, camera, binoculars, backpack, water, snacks

Tips: Due to the nature of these trails, it is best to go with a hiking partner and not by yourself. Do not go too late in the day, especially during the rainy season to avoid rain, but also to avoid getting lost and it getting dark. Make sure to take water. This probably isn’t an activity you want to make a trip for by itself, but there is plenty to do in the area to combine with this activity, or it can be a good place to stretch your legs on a longer drive if you are passing by.
