Children’s Eternal Rainforest, Pocosol Biological Station

Posted on February 3, 2024February 9, 2024 by Ultimate Guide

About: This sector of the Children’s Eternal Rainforest offers 10 kilometers of trails deep in the rainforest. Along the trails there is a lake, a waterfall and most spectacularly, the boiling mud pits, or fumarolas. Reservations are not required to hike the trails but are strongly recommended. When you make your reservation they will explain how to get here so that you don’t take the wrong road and get stuck. They also offer lodging, meals, and guided tours, all of which do require advance reservation.

Province: Alajuela

Starting from: La Fortuna

Time to reach from starting location: 55 minutes

Time needed for activity: 3 hours

Kid friendly: Yes

Wheelchair accessible: No

What to wear and bring: Comfortable clothes, walking or hiking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, hat, sunglasses, poncho or rain jacket, field guides, camera, binoculars, backpack, water, snacks, pack lunch

Tips: The road to get here is very long and rough, and definitely requires 4WD. It is far away from any town, but that means you will feel so connected to nature, and have the opportunity to see a lot of wildlife. Bring everything you may need with you, especially food and water. You can easily spend a full day or a half day of hiking and birding here.
