Palo Verde National Park

Posted on October 14, 2025March 24, 2025 by Ultimate Guide

About: This national park has a unique structure with a road passing through the park after the entrance. The 7 hiking trails branch off from the road at various points. You are intended to drive along the road about 8 km before reaching the first trail. Some of the trails are out and back, and some are loops that exit further along the road, so you will need to walk back to your car to then drive to the next trailhead. Alternatively you can park once, hike all the trails you wish, and then return to your car. However, you can end up quite far from your car. Parking is simply on the side of the road wherever you please. The trails range in length from about half a kilometer to 2 kilometers. Among the attractions are a picturesque dock that extends out onto a lagoon that is sometimes visible and sometimes covered with plantlife, a large rock that you can climb for a great view, and of course, plenty of wildlife. There is a research station, but it is not open to the public. There is also a dock at the very end of the road on the Tempisque River. However, you cannot get a tour from this point. It is simply used as a stop on tours that begin further up the river.
