Catarata El Rey

Posted on June 1, 2025December 26, 2024 by Ultimate Guide

About: This is a beautiful waterfall during the rainy season when the flow of the river is high and it is full. During the dry season, it is underwhelming. However, the rain makes the hike muddier, slipperier, and overall more challenging. The only way to visit is with a guide from the local women’s group, a great cause to support. They can provide breakfast and lunch as needed, or you can bring your own pack lunch.

Province: San Jose

Starting from: Downtown San Jose

Time to reach from starting location: 2 hours 29 minutes

Time needed for activity: 3 hours

Kid friendly: 5+

Wheelchair accessible: No

What to wear and bring: Comfortable clothes, walking or hiking shoes, sandals or water shoes, swimsuit, towel, change of clothes, sunscreen, insect repellent, hat, sunglasses, poncho or rain jacket, camera, backpack, water, snacks, pack lunch

Tips: The road from San Jose is long and unpaved, and it is best to have a 4×4 SUV to visit. There are several other nearby activities to do and lodges to stay overnight.
