Barra Honda National Park

Posted on October 2, 2025March 19, 2025 by Ultimate Guide

About: This national park has hiking trails and is one of the only places in the country with natural caves (the other being the Venado Caves in La Fortuna). The caves can only be visited with a guide on a tour, and reservations must be made ahead of time. The trails can be visited without a guide, and without a reservation, by simply paying the entrance fee. Three caves can be visited by going down lengthy ladders, since the entrance is at the top of a mesa. The mesa is first reached by a 4 km hike, or by a 3 km drive (if you have a 4×4) and a 1 km walk.

Province: Guanacaste

Starting from: Liberia

Time to reach from starting location: 1 hour 44 minutes

Time needed for activity: 4 hours

Kid friendly: Yes (10+ for caves)

Wheelchair accessible: No

What to wear and bring: Comfortable clothes, walking or hiking shoes, change of clothes, sunscreen, insect repellent, hat, sunglasses, poncho or rain jacket, camera, backpack, water, snacks, pack lunch

Tips: You should not do the cave tour if you are not physically fit (you have to climb out the ladders you go down), if you are scared of confined spaces (the caves are large but still confined), or if you are scared of heights (the ladders are tall, but you do use a harness). There are also bats inside the caves.
