Isla Chora

Posted on February 27, 2026April 18, 2025 by Ultimate Guide

About: This is a small rocky island near the south end of Samara Beach (less than 1 kilometer offshore). It has a small sandy beach to land on. It can be reached by boat, kayak, or even swimming for strong swimmers. It is a popular place to go snorkeling.

Province: Guanacaste

Starting from: Samara

Time to reach from starting location: 10 minutes

Time needed for activity: 2+ hours

Kid friendly: Yes

Wheelchair accessible: No

What to wear and bring: Comfortable clothes, sandals or water shoes, swimsuit, towel, change of clothes, sunscreen, insect repellent, hat, sunglasses, poncho or rain jacket, camera, dry bag, water, snacks, pack lunch, snorkeling gear

Tips: Always check conditions before going. If you want to snorkel, you will want calm and clear waters. If you are going by kayak, pay attention to the currents and wind. Sometimes, kayakers have no problem reaching the island but then struggle on the way back. If you are swimming, it would be smart not to go alone, or at least let someone know you are going so they can look out for your return.
