La Fortuna Waterfall

Posted on February 10, 2024February 9, 2024 by Ultimate Guide

About: Approximately 500 steps down to the waterfall, and then back up. At the bottom you can get in the water at the waterfall. The water is cold and you must be very careful with the current and the rocks. Listen to the authorities on site. There is also river you can get in that is safer and calmer but just as cold. There are small fish in the river who will nibble on your toes harmlessly. There is a restaurant, as well as a gift shop. There is a butterfly garden and an orchid garden. You may see animals like pizotes and monkeys.

Province: Alajuela

Starting from: La Fortuna

Time to reach from starting location: 9 minutes

Time needed for activity: 1-2 hours

Kid friendly: Yes, but they must be able to walk down the steps or you must be able to carry them.

Wheelchair accessible: Mostly no, because of the steps. There is a viewpoint to see the waterfall from above but you won’t be able to get down to the bottom.

What to wear and bring: Comfortable clothes, walking or hiking shoes, sandals or water shoes, swimsuit, towel, change of clothes, sunscreen, insect repellent, hat, sunglasses, poncho or rain jacket, field guides, camera, binoculars, backpack, water, snacks, pack lunch

Tips: You must be able to walk down the steps and hike back up! There are benches along the way if you need a break. There are bathrooms and showers for you to change in at the top but not at the bottom. Have your swimsuit on before you go down the steps. Just remember you’ll have to carry down and up whatever you bring so keep it as light as possible.
