Venado Caves

Posted on January 3, 2024February 9, 2024 by Ultimate Guide

About: A very unique experience, especially in Costa Rica, which is not known for its caves. It is quite a vast cave system. You can only enter with a guide on an authorized tour. You can see bats, spiders and other insects.

Province: Alajuela

Starting from: La Fortuna

Time to reach from starting location: 52 minutes

Time needed for activity: 2 hours

Kid friendly: Yes, but they must be comfortable in a cave setting (dark, confined, wet, bats and bugs). 4+ years old recommended.

Wheelchair accessible: No

What to wear and bring: Wear closed shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. Water shoes are a great option, but tennis shoes or hiking shoes are good options as well. Wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting wet. Longer pants and sleeves are better to protect against any scrapes, but not necessary. You can wear your swimsuit underneath your clothes, but it is not necessary. There are bathrooms and showers available for after. Bring an extra change of clothes and a towel. Leave everything in your car. They will provide all of the necessary gear such as helmets and headlights. Photo packages are offered at an additional fee. Otherwise you can bring your own cameras and phones. Just be aware of the potential damages due to water, bumping or dropping your equipment. A waterproof case for your phone is a good option. Wear bug repellent.

Tips: The majority of the tour is in large, open chambers, however some narrower areas must be passed throughout the caves. In addition, there are very narrow areas at the end of the tour that are optional.
