About: This is a short but steep and technical trail down to 3 waterfalls and then back up to get out. There is a 4th waterfall that is visible but may or may not be accessible. The 3rd waterfall is probably where you want to spend most of your time. Hike all the way down first, observing all 3 waterfalls. Swim in the 3rd waterfall, and then if you want you can stop at the other 2 waterfalls on your way back up to swim in them as well. There is a restaurant at the top.
Province: Guanacaste
Starting from: La Fortuna / Monteverde
Time to reach from starting location: 1 hour 55 minutes / 54 minutes
Time needed for activity: 2 hours
Kid friendly: 10+
Wheelchair accessible: No
What to wear and bring: Cash, comfortable clothes, walking or hiking shoes, swimsuit, towel, change of clothes, sunscreen, insect repellent, hat, poncho or rain jacket, field guides, camera, binoculars, water, snacks, pack lunch
Tips: Make sure to bring cash, as it is cash only. There are 2 parking lots, but the second parking lot closer to the falls is on a sketchy road and definitely requires a 4×4 car. You’re better off parking farther and walking an extra kilometer. Besides, the views from this short hike are worth it. Change in your car before you hike. The “changing room” leaves a lot to be desired. Do not recommend with young kids, since the trail is steep and technical. This hike is near another waterfall hike called La Piedra del Indio Waterfalls, so either compare both to see which one you prefer, or take advantage and do both! It is a great pit stop on the road from Monteverde to La Fortuna, or vice versa. Of course you can also just make a day trip from Monteverde.
